Yoshio Muraoka, aged 88, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025. He is survived by his sons, Shin Muraoka and Ken Muraoka, his daughter-in-law, Kathryn Muraoka, and his beloved grandchildren, Madelyn Muraoka and Nick Muraoka. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Yoshimi Muraoka.

Yoshio’s life was marked by resilience and courage. As a survivor of the atomic bomb, he endured unimaginable hardships, living underground and subsisting on canned pumpkin for every meal. Despite these challenges, he went on to lead a remarkable life.

He graduated from Tokyo University, a testament to his dedication to education and a lifetime of learning. He dedicated several years of service to the US Embassy in Japan, where his work left a lasting impact. Yoshio also triumphed over cancer, demonstrating his unwavering strength and determination. He cherished his time living in Japan, a place he called home twice in his lifetime, yet loved living in Oak Ridge even more.

Yoshio was an avid reader with an amazing collection of books, he was selected to start a division of his former company in Japan, showcasing his leadership and expertise. His love for learning was evident throughout his life, with a particular passion for economics. 

Yoshio will be remembered for his incredible spirit, his dedication to family, and his remarkable life story. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
