William "Bill" Thomas McCarley, age 87 of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, October 01, 2015, after a brief illness.
Bill was born April 25, 1928 in Athens, Alabama. As a teenager, he played saxophone and clarinet in local dance bands. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees in chemical engineering from Auburn University. He served his country as a Naval officer during the Korean Conflict, ending his military career as a Lieutenant Commander. He came to oak Ridge in 1955 to work at X-10, then K-25 until his retirement in 1990.Bill and his wife spent 17 years as church nursery volunteers at First Baptist Church in oak Ridge. They also enjoyed 56 years as season's ticket holders to Oak Ridge Playhouse and rarely missed a performance. Bill enjoyed tennis, and was an avid football fan, and dearly loved animals. He was a true southern gentleman and completely devoted to his family.
He is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Carl McCarley; mother, Ellen Sherard McCarley, and sister, Helen Thompson.
He is survived by his wife oif 56 years, Sue McCarley; son, Kevin McCArley, of Huntsville, Al;daughter, Michelle Shaffner and husband Darrell, of Lakeland, TN; grandson, Christopher Phillips, of Lakeland, TN; niece, Sherard Lewis and her husband Robert and family; and nephew, Richard Thompson and family.
Bill was laid to rest with full military honors at Oak Ridge Memorial Park on Saturday, October 03, 2015, in a private service surrounded by his loving family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter or the animal charity of your choice.
