Oak Ridge

Sigmund (Sig) Weiner Mosko of Oak Ridge passed away Friday, February 28, 2025. He was 88 years old.He is survived by his loving life partner of more than 60 years Brenda Mosko and two sisters: Mildred Brooks of Philadelphia, PA and Debbie Shrier of River Vale, New Jersey. He is also survived by three children: Joel Mosko (Linda) of Marlton, NJ; Tammy Goldstein (Keith) of Indianapolis, IN; and Beth Mosko (Eric David) of Fort Collins, CO. Sig also leaves behind five grandchildren: Samantha Flomenberg (Samuel) of Philadelphia, PA; David Mosko of Baltimore, MD, Gavi Goldstein of Indianapolis, IN, Leah Goldstein of Peoria, IL and Cendie Masse of Fort Collins, CO. Sig had one great grandchild, Watson Masse of Fort Collins, CO as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sig was born on June 9 th, 1936 in Philadelphia PA to the late Maurice and Ida (Weiner) Mosko. He grew up in the Logan neighborhood of Philadelphia. As a teenager, he worked as a grocery store clerk and part time sorting mail at the US Post Office where his father was an assistant station superintendent in order to save money for his future college. As a boy growing up at the end of World War II, he developed an interest in science. Learning of the Atomic Bomb and gleaning bits and pieces of nuclear science were very fascinating to him. Upon graduating high school, he attended Drexel University’s engineering school in Philadelphia. A co-op opportunity in a far off place called Oak Ridge, TN caught his attention. His first journey to work there in 1955 began a 70 year presence for him in East Tennessee.

Upon graduating college in 1958, he began working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory full time in what would become his lifetime career as an electrical engineer. He retired from the Physics Division in 2000 but continued on as a consultant until 2012. He was passionate about his work and entered into his third “retirement” as a certifying engineer at Diversified Product Inspections until the fall of 2024.

In his early years in Oak Ridge, he was active in the Oak Ridge Playhouse. It was through a social event related to the playhouse where he started the most important relationship of his life with future wife Brenda Krauss, a student at the University of Tennessee. Brenda’s cousin Ruth Carey introduced them on a blind date of sorts in the summer of 1962. They were married in the summer of 1963. He loved, cared for, and doted on Brenda with as much dedication and joy as any spouse could muster.

Sig and Brenda were avid world travelers in their later years exploring all corners of the globe. They loved sharing photos and stories from their travels and always came home with tokens representing the many cultures they had explored.

Sig was dedicated to scouting in all its forms covering three generations. He was an Eagle Scout in Philadelphia at age 15. He was a guiding presence with all three of his children in different scouting related organizations. He traveled to New Jersey to lead cub scout meetings for his grandson David and was present when David achieved his Eagle Scout rank in 2017.

Sig was a long-time member of the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge where he served as President through several terms. Funeral plans are for 1 pm on Monday at Mott-McKamey Funeral Home. The family asks that memorial donations in memory of Sig be made to the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge, B’nai B’rith or East Tennessee PBS.
