• Roy Douglas Scarbrough, 65, of the Karns Community in Knoxville, passed away on
September 23, 2016 at 11:30 AM in Sweetwater Hospital. Born in Monterey, Tennessee,
Roy was a lifelong resident of Oliver Springs for most of his life. Despite being deaf
from birth, he worked as an auto mechanic, which he learned from his father and older
brother, and in building maintenance. Roy never married and had no children of his own,
so the children of his brother and sisters were all very important to him. He was always
kind and generous to them and never failed to ask about each and every one.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Ina Scarbrough; brother Carl
Scarbrough; sisters Aline Combs and Mary Pickard; nephew Fred Combs, Jr.; and niece
Marsha Davis.
He is survived by his sister Georgia Black and husband David of Hampton, Georgia;
sister Janie Fox of Knoxville; sister Donna Hawley and husband Mark of Knoxville;
brothers-in-law Fred Combs of Winchester, Kentucky, and Eddie Fox of Knoxville;
nephews Carl Scarbrough, Jr., Donald Pickard, Douglas Scarbrough, Michael Pickard,
John Combs, Joseph Fox, John Black, and Chase Henley; nieces Angela Cowan, Tami
Combs, Wendy Domaschko, Christy Bonner, Lorie Fox, Karen Rhoton, Jessica Phillips,
Stephanie Grant, Heather Combs, Sarah Knies, and Candace Pickard; 44 great nephews
and nieces; and numerous cousins and friends of whom he loved quite dearly.
Roy's family will begin receiving friends at Sunday October 02, 20161:00 PM, after
which a funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home, 1017 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The Rev. Garvin Walls will be officiating. Immediately following,
Roy will be laid to rest beside his parents with a graveside service in Mount Pisgah
Baptist Church Cemetery in Oliver Springs, TN 37840, where he was a member.
Special thanks goes to the many diligent staff members of the following institutions who
cared for Roy, including Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Briarcliff Healthcare
And Rehab Center, Sweetwater Living Senior & Disability Services, and Sweetwater
Hospital.
Roy truly loved helping those less fortunate than himself. He enjoyed spaghetti westerns,
an occasional beer, smoking cigarettes, and chatting with family and friends. Those who
wish to honor him are asked to celebrate his life by doing an unexpected act of kindness
for someone in need. Also, please join us across the world as we celebrate Roy's life with
a final toast. He would've loved that. Happy trails, Roy!
