Richard Coston “Rick” Evans

June 7, 1949 – April 13, 2025

They called him Coach. Richard Coston Evans, known to generations of students and athletes as “Coach Evans,” passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, at the age of 75. A beloved educator, coach, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Rick’s life was defined by perseverance, passion, and a deep commitment to his community.

Born on June 7, 1949, Rick graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1967, where he starred as a standout baseball player for the Wildcats. He continued his baseball career at the University of Tennessee, where he played until a tragic construction accident in the summer of 1970 resulted in the loss of his right leg. While the injury ended his playing days, it only strengthened his resolve to stay close to the game he loved.

Rick earned a B.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee in 1972 and soon began a 30-year career as a teacher and coach in the Oak Ridge Schools system. He thrived as a physical education teacher, inspiring and encouraging students across the city. Coach Evans became a name synonymous with dedication, compassion, and fun—endearing himself to generations of children in Oak Ridge.

In 1977, Rick became head coach of the Oak Ridge High School baseball team, leading with the same passion and determination that defined his life. Later, he shifted his focus to youth sports, coaching his own children and countless others through city leagues, school programs, and the Oak Ridge summer playground program. Whether on the baseball diamond, in gym class, or on the hardwood at the Boys Club and Civic Center, Rick’s impact was profound.

Nothing brought Rick more joy than his family. He was a proud and loving father to Don Evans, Jill Dudych, and Pam Rhea, and a devoted grandfather to Olivia Rhea, Harrison Evans, Reese Dudych, and Patrick Rhea. Their accomplishments filled him with a pride that far exceeded his own.

In 2013, Rick married the love of his life, Genia Evans. Their marriage was full of laughter, faith, and unwavering commitment. A devoted Christian, Rick grew spiritually with Genia’s loving guidance. Her care, especially as Rick’s health declined in recent years, was a special gift.

Rick was the son of Richard A. (R.A.) Evans, Jr. and Betty Evans. He was preceded in death by his brother Steve Evans. Rick is survived by his wife, Genia Evans of Crossville, TN; his children and their spouses Don Evans (Kim Evans), Jill Dudych, Pam Rhea (Kevin Rhea), D.C. Robbins (Angie Robbins), and Jessica Narwold (Benjamin Narwold); and his grandchildren Olivia Rhea, Harrison Evans, Reese Dudych, Patrick Rhea, Lochlan Robbins, Kylee Robbins, and Niles Narwold. Rick also cherished his close relationship with his nieces.

Coach Evans leaves behind a legacy of resilience, kindness, and service. His lessons—both in life and on the field—will continue to echo in the hearts of those he inspired.

A celebration of life will be held in honor of Coach Evans at The Oak Ridge History Museum (former Wildcat Den) located at 102 Robertsville Rd in Oak Ridge. The event will take place on Sunday, May 25 from 4pm – 7pm and is open to all.
