November 11, 1921 — May 14, 2012

Martha "Hope" Byrd McWhorter, age 90, of Oak Ridge passed away Monday May 14, 2012 at her home.
Mrs. McWhorter was born November 11, 1921 in Hatteras, North Carolina to the late Jessie Bryon and Laura Atwood Austin. Martha and her late husband Thomas A. McWhorter moved to Oak Ridge in 1943 and were charter members of the 1943 Oak Ridge Club. Martha had worked for the Mother's Day Out Program at First United Methodist Church and was last employed with the Oak Ridger as a inserter. She loved to cook - make candy and was known for her chocolate peanut butter fudge. Martha also loved gardening, especially flowers, sewing, and crocheting. Martha always put others before herself.
In addition to her husband and parents Martha is preceded in death by two brothers Bryon and Austin. She is survived by three daughters Lessie Drabek and her husband Jerry of Grand Island, Florida, Barbara Whitt of Oak Ridge, and Commander Lisa McWhorter United States Navy, Suffolk, Virginia, sister Virginia Mae Taylor of Antioch, Tennessee, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and special friends Betty and Paul Woods and Reva Beckler Warren.
Funeral service will be held Saturday May 19, 2012 1:30pm in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with Chaplin Tom Rayford officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from1:00 to 1:30pm at the funeral home.
