Margaret ("Margo") Griffith Jones Stone, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2017. She was born in Culpeper, Virginia, on June 20, 1929, to Hal Roberts Jones and Bertha Smith Jones. She graduated from Culpeper High School and received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Duke University. She worked as an instructor of Mathematics at several universities, including Duke, the University of South Carolina, North Carolina State University, and the College of William & Mary, before moving to Oak Ridge in 1967 to work for Dow Chemical and later for Union Carbide following its acquisition by Dow.
Margaret loved cats, classical music, kayaking, and chocolate, not necessarily in that order. She was a parishioner at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a member of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association. She had a beautiful soprano voice, a dry sense of humor, and made a terrific pan of fudge.
Margaret is survived by one daughter, Catherine Thorp of Roslindale, MA. She leaves four granddaughters: Susan Dionne and her husband, Peter, of Hudson, NH; Margaret Ziani and her husband, Menem, of Nashua, NH; Juliana Thorp of Aurora, CO; and Lydia Thorp of Cameron, NC. She also leaves one great-grandson, Zachary Ziani.
There will be a small funeral service at the Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. on, January 22, followed by burial in the family plot in Culpeper, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church or the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter.
