Ltc. Milkovich, George, age 96 of Oak Ridge died on Jan. 31, 2011, after an extended illness.
George was born in Midland, PA, July 17, 1914, of Milan and Mary Milkovich. George played football in high school, and later played college football at the University of Kentucky and the University of New Mexico. He joined the U. S. Army in October 1942 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in May of 1943. During WWII, he served in the OSS behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia. Immediately after the war, he served in the occupational forces in several locations in Europe, including Salzburg, Austria, where he met and married the love of his life, Lydia. During his army career in intelligence, George served in Trieste, Italy; Chambersburg, PA; Taipei,Taiwan; Bremerhaven, Germany; Milwaukee, WI; and Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. After retiring from the Army in 1965, George worked as a civilian for the U. S. Army at Ft. Holabird, Baltimore, MD, for 4 years. After retiring from government service, George and Lydia moved to Chambersburg, PA for several years, until they moved to Oak Ridge, TN in 1983. He was an avid sports fan, following the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates his entire life.
He will be lovingly remembered by his fierce devotion and strength to his family, positive attitude, and enjoyment of every day of his life. George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lydia, and their daughter, Mary Jellison and her husband, Gerald (Jay), all of Oak Ridge, granddaughters Lisa Hall and husband Brian, and Katie Martin and husband Justin, and great grandchildren Lauren Hall, Michael Hall, and Madeleine Martin, of Knoxville, TN. George's surviving brothers are Ted of Rockville, MD, Alex of Beaver, PA, Steve of Washington, DC, and sister Mildred of Beaver, PA. He is predeceased by brothers Milan, Pete, Eli, and Sammy, and by sisters Sayka and Dorothy. He will be interred at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN or a charity of their choice. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
