"Once an Adult, Twice a Child," such was the life of Julia Lee Moon Madix. Julia peacefully departed this life on Sunday, May 27, 2012 to join a host of loved ones in heaven, including her late husband, James (Jim) Madix, (died 2003 ) young son Dennis Madix (died 1976 ) parents Hattie Ethel Hood Moon and James Jacob Moon, several brothers and sisters, and many friends.
Julia was born on Halloween, October 31, 1932 one of Ethel and Jacob's twelve children; growing up on a farm in Decatur, Tennessee. Julia was very proud of her Cherokee Indian Heritage and growing up in East Tennessee. She graduated from the University of Tennessee and taught school in Meigs County. Later she moved to Oak Ridge and worked as a secretary for the Department of Energy, until she met her future husband. Jim and Julia had five children together, Steven Glen Madix, Jean Madix Atkinson Williams (husband Keith), Karen Madix Bullock (partner DeWayne), twins: Susan Madix (husband Steve Dodd), and Dennis Edward Madix (deceased). Other survivors include a step-son, Richard Loren Madix, grandchildren, Kevin and Nathan Atkinson, and Austin and Abigail Bullock. Step-grandchildren are Patrick, Bethany, and Alex Williams.
Julia and Jim raised their family on Henley Road in Oak Ridge. Julia enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, camping, playing bridge, and raising her family. A few years after Jim's passing, Julia moved to Greenfield Assisted Living Facility. As Alzheimer's disease progressed the family eventually moved her into a new home with round-the-clock sitters. As the family watched their mother's abilities fade, they cherished her strength and determination; and could always count on her constant and happy demeanor.
The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Jim Giles and his staff, Amedisys Home Health, and Hospice. Without their support, it would not have been possible to keep mom in a home-environment. Additionally, we would like to thank caregivers, Shirley Harris and Cynthia Harris. There are no words to describe our appreciation and gratitude, knowing that mom was safe and comfortable under your loving care, as you took care of her every need. It was a relief to have you with us as God called her home.
Services are planned at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home for Tuesday, May 29, 2012 6:30pm. Graveside service will be held Wednesday May 30, 2012 10:00am at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 5:00 to 6:30pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial gifts be sent to the Alzheimer's Tennessee, Inc. P.O. Box 10088 Knoxville, Tennessee 37939-9910.
