Jean Obituary

October 19, 1921 — August 5, 2011

Jean Childress passed away peacefully on Aug. 5, 2011, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Jean was born on Oct. 19, 1921, in Clarksburg W.Va., to William Leslie Hornor and Gertrude Bishop Hornor. She attended Morris Harvey College and West Virginia Wesleyan College where she studied music.

Jean was a 53-year resident of Oak Ridge. She worked at The Oak Ridger for 35 years and had an unrivaled command of the English language. Upon her retirement, Jean volunteered for several years at the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and keeping up with current events. Jean was a gifted musician and played the piano by ear, providing countless hours of enjoyment to all who had the privilege of hearing her tickle the ivories. Jean was honored to be an occasional organist at Christ Church Episcopal in Rugby, Tenn., in the mid 1960s. She also had a vibrant sense of humor and laughter was an integral part of her life.

Jean most recently resided at Greenfield Retirement Center, where she volunteered in the gift shop, delivered the newsletter and most importantly blessed all who entered there with her piano playing in the lobby. She was the accompanist for numerous nightly sing-a-longs and will be remembered for that and her quiet, gentle spirit.

Jean is survived by her four children, Tim Childress of Atlanta, Ga., Mike Childress and his wife, Phyllis, of Murfreesboro, Anne Leitnaker and her husband, John, of Kingston, and Molly Brewer and her husband, Olin, of Oak Ridge. She is also survived by two sisters, Fran Sessions and Kitty Shaw, who both reside in Dallas, Texas. Other survivors include four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the compassionate staff of 3 West at MMC, and the Covenant Hospice staff.

A memorial service for Jean will be held on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, 461 West Outer Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
