Jean C. Petersen, age 90, of Knoxville, TN passed away peacefully on July 15 2011 at her home.
Jean was born May 23, 1923 in Pennington Gap, VA to Joseph Franklin and Mary Pennington Carpenter. Jean graduated from Pennington High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business education from James Madison University.
Jean moved to Oak Ridge, TN in 1943 where she was employed by Eastman Kodak. She left Oak Ridge briefly, then returned in 1947 to work with AEC. In 1951, she met her future husband while playing bridge at the Oak Ridge Recreation Center. She remained an active bridge player all her life. She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1947.
Jean is survived by the tremendous love she had for her family including her husband of 60 years, Guy F. Petersen, her four children and in-laws; Joe and wife Teresa, Beth and husband Mark Vowell, Jon and wife Donna, David and wife Jennifer; and her seven grandchildren; Gordon, Rebecca, Tyler, Ryan, Hannah and Claire Petersen, and Abigail Vowell.
A service celebrating Jean's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, TN. Receiving of friends will follow the service until 3 pm.
Presiding over the service will be the Reverend Stella Roberts and the Reverend Mahan Archer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Jeanette Reynolds Fund of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge.
