Jane Walker Trammell, much loved mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, died October 11, 2024, at the Shannondale skilled nursing facility in Maryville, Tennessee, where she resided after a serious fall in her home. She lived joyfully and filled her 98 years with family, faith, sports, friends and service.
Jane was born on April 6, 1926, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Carmen Ercell Parker and Dr. Charles Emmett Walker. She grew up in the tuberculosis hospital community of Sanatorium, Mississippi, where her parents were on staff. She completed high school in nearby Magee, graduated from the University of Mississippi, and attended Vanderbilt Medical school, being one of its early female students.
Jane married Herbert Eugene Trammell in 1949 and moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where they started their family of four children in 1952. She lived in Oak Ridge for over 70 years. Jane was a founding member of the First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, where she put her full heart into church circles and missions. She loved her annual trips to Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, for women’s spiritual retreats. Jane put her medical training to good use by serving many years on the Oak Ridge Hospital Board of Directors.
Jane was an excellent athlete and was never happier than when she was on the tennis court or golf course. She played in tennis leagues into her early 90s when macular degeneration made it too difficult to see the ball. She played her last round of golf at 94.
During the last 35 years of her life, she spent half her time at her home in Key West, Florida, where she enjoyed retirement with her husband and hosted family and friends. She made wonderful friends through tennis and golf who gathered at her home on an almost daily basis for postgame socializing over coffee, tea, and goodies. She greatly enjoyed riding her bicycle around the island to keep up on community happenings.
Jane loved abundantly and was beloved. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Herbert Trammell, her youngest son Brian Trammell, her parents, and her three brothers. She is survived by her daughters Carmen Trammell and Lisa Trammell Thomas (Buzz), son Bert Trammell, daughter-in-law Zayna Trammell, and grandchildren Rachel Thomas, Sarah Thomas (Andrew Sharman), Andrew Trammell (Robyn), Alex Trammell (Audi), Rebecca McDonough (Xavier Bridges), Charlie Trammell (Morgan), and 7 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, Tennessee 37830, or to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mottmckameyfh.com.
