Jacob Frederick "Fred" Manneschmidt, of Oak Ridge, died on Jan. 25, 2011, at his home, five days before his 88th birthday.
Mr. Manneschmidt was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he served as lay reader, usher, and on various committees.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Vaughan Manneschmidt, their sons, Jay and wife, Jennie, Charles and wife, Linda Billman, and Eric and wife, Margaret, all of Knoxville; and grandchildren, Noah of Huntsville, Ala., and Anna, Emily, Ellen, Mary, Amos, Ward, and John, of Knoxville.
Mr. Manneschmidt was born Jan. 30, 1923, in Norfolk, Va. He was raised in Portsmouth, Va.
Following graduation in 1943 from the University of Virginia where he earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Mr. Manneschmidt joined the war effort's Manhattan Project.
Mr. Manneschmidt served briefly in the U.S. Army at Los Alamos, N.M., after the war. He then returned to Oak Ridge and resumed his career working variously at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 plant, until his retirement, in 1985.
Mr. Manneschmidt immensely enjoyed appearing in over 35 productions at Oak Ridge Playhouse and served on its Board of Directors. He was an avid and selfless volunteer at numerous civic organizations, including Methodist Medical Center, the American Museum of Science and Energy, FISH, Contact Helpline, and Recording for the Blind. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and hiking and was a longtime member of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club.
The Rev. Craig Kallio will conduct a memorial service at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the St. Stephen's Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen's or a charity of your choice.
