Garland F. Mathis, age 87, of LaFollette left us on October 29, 2024. Garland was born in Wayne County, Ohio on 12/28/1936.
He was a member of East LaFollette Baptist Church, he was a teacher since 1961 and was a graduate of Central High School in Wartburg. His collegiate was Tenn. Tech with a B.S. He also attended Roane State, Akron U., LMU, and Cumberland College. He was a charter member of AFT in Campbell County.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ann R. Woodruff Mathis, daughter, Maschelle R. Mathis Smtih, son-in-law, George C. Smith, grandson, Jay D. Garland Smith, parents Pete and Helen Mathis and sister, Wanda Mathis Pennington, Lillian Mathis Shannon, Betty Mathis Nance and Marie Mathis Wyatt.
He is survived by daughter Sonya D. Mathis Roy and husband William Roy of LaFollette, grandchildren, Joshua Hugh, Misty Dawn, Kevin Lynn and Jacob Michael, great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Morgan, Breanna, Christian, Destiny, Lane and Rae Beth, sisters, Shirley Henry and husband Cledys of Heath, Ohio, brother, Ronald K. and wife Betty of Heath, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends, Sunday, November 3, 2024 between the hours of 11:00am – 1:00pm at Mott-McKamey Funeral Home in Oak Ridge, TN. Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm in the chapel of the funeral home. Graveside service will follow funeral service at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
