Obituary for Elaine Penland Griffies

Elaine P. Griffies, age 87, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was born April 29, 1937 in Scaly Mountain, North Carolina to Henry Oden Penland and Effie Patterson Penland.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charlie Griffies; brothers Edwin Penland and Carl Penland; sisters Kate Amos, Bessie Hudson, and Mabel Penland; nieces and nephew Donna Richardson, Sheila Hudson, and Michael Penland.

She came to Oak Ridge in 1948 and was a 1955 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. She was an avid bowler for many years with the Oak Ridge Bowling Association. She worked at the K-25 Plant, serving her country for 23 years before retiring in 1998. She loved quilting, crocheting, reading, gardening, and canning homegrown vegetables; but most of all, Elaine loved her family.

Elaine is survived by her children, Joyce and Randy Isenhour and Sharon and Tim Rose; grandchildren and great grandchildren Jennifer and Neal Huneycutt, Kollyn and Landyn, Matthew and Autumn Rose, Sophia, Kaden, and Hadley, Jonathan Rose and Lynsa Lovell, Connor and Emma; brother and sister-in-law David and Mary Griffies; nieces and nephews: Anne Bissett, Don Griffies, Steven Penland, Patti Burnick, Melissa Forrest and John Richardson.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 11:00 am at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at the Alexander Guest House where she resided for the last 4½ years, Professional Case Management, especially her nurse, Taylor, and to Amedysis Hospice for the exceptional care provided to their Mother, Memaw, and Aunt, during her illness.
