Dorothy Obituary

January 18, 1922 — February 3, 2011

Dorothy Hyatt, wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following complications from hip surgery on February 3, 2011.

Mrs. Hyatt was born in Sylva, North Carolina on January 18, 1922. She resided in several places growing up in Western North Carolina, including Ravensford, now a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and graduated High School in Robbinsville, North Carolina, 2nd in her class to her sister Allene. She attended Asheville Business College after high school and then enlisted in the Women's Army Corps 6720th WAC HQ PLATOON supporting the 15th Air Force during World War II. She went through Basic Training in Daytona Beach, where the Daytona Speedway now stands and then she was shipped overseas to the European Theater from Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia, in January, 1944, landing at Casablanca and moving on through North Africa to Algiers and Tunis and then on to Italy following the advance of Allied Armies. She served in Bari, Naples and Rome during the Italian Campaign and returned home in October, 1945 and proudly displayed her Theater Medals for the rest of her life. She met Walter L. Hyatt in Waynesville after the end of the war and they were married on September 1, 1946. Following brief times in Kansas City, Missouri, Spartanburg, South Carolina, Asheville, North Carolina, they came to Oak Ridge in April, 1953, where Mr. Hyatt went to work at ORNL, retiring in 1984, and she went to work at Oak Ridge Associated Universities in 1964 in the Fiscal Services Department, and continued there until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed a long and happy retirement at home at 183 California Avenue in Oak Ridge and Estates Assisted Living on Emory Valley Road.

Mrs. Hyatt was preceded in death by her parents, John B. Smith in 1979 and Charlotte Morris Smith in 1961, a sister, Allene Vavruska in 1976, a brother, Blaine Smith in 1927 and her husband, Walter L. Hyatt in 1998 and her daughter, Lisa Hyatt Richardson in 1993.

She is survived by her brother, Bruce T. Smith of Clinton, Washington, sons, Walter Keith Hyatt and Timothy Bruce Hyatt and special friend Tyra Rowley of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; a grandson, Jonathan Hyatt Richardson of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and a great-granddaughter, Kloey Rachelle Hyatt Richardson of Muskogee, Oklahoma, who was her shining light. She is also survived by many friends and family in Oak Ridge and North Carolina and was especially fond of the Village Restaurant and the people there.

The family would like to thank the employees at Estates Assisted Living for the 4 years that Mrs. Hyatt spent down there, we appreciate their caring and hard work, and you made her last years better.

The family will receive friends at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home from 11 AM to 1 PM on Tuesday, February 8th, 2011. Graveside Services will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens where she will be laid to rest next to Mr. Hyatt.
