Cullen P. McWright, better known as "Mac", passed away on September 3, 2011 at NHC of Oak Ridge.
Mr. McWright was born on May 10, 1907 in Mt. Hope, Alabama. He was one of sixteen children born to T.C. and Carrie McWright. Mr. McWright's surviving sister is Rae Sneed of Florence, Alabama. Mac worked his way through college and was a proud graduate of the University of Alabama. He began coaching and teaching in Pampa, Texas. When World War II began, he did munitions work at Panrex Ordinance plant. In 1944 he worked for Tennessee Eastman Corporation in Oak Ridge, ultimately working at Y-12 and X-10. After his retirement from Union Carbide, he worked in the County Clerk's office in Clinton. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church, Oak Ridge. He was an avid golfer and founding member of Oak Ridge Country Club. Mac drove his car to Morning Pointe Assisted Living when he was 100 years old.
His first wife, Etta Grace McWright and his second wife Dorothy McWright, and son-in-law Billy G. Williams preceded him in death. Fourteen brothers and sisters out of the sixteen had preceded him in death by his 104th birthday.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Barbara (Leon) Pruitt, Newark, Delaware, and Mary Jane Williams, Oak Ridge. Five grandchildren, Liane (Stan) Aldridge, Oak Ridge, Lori Keller, Knoxville, Vicki (Roger)Wagner, Patterson, NY, Traci Pruitt, Newark, Delaware, and Lee (Jennifer) Pruitt, Milford, Delaware. He leaves ten great grandchildren, Sarah and Caroline Aldridge, Erin and Neal Tannenbaum, Max and Kay Schenck, Christopher and Taylor Pruitt, Amanda and Samantha Campbell and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 7th from 6:00 to 8:00pm. A graveside service will be held at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the following day at 10:00am. The family requests donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
