Mrs. Betty Joyce Siler Phillips Smith, 88 of Oak Ridge, TN, made her spiritual transition peacefully at Park West Medical Hospital as she was granted her angel wings surrounded by her children and grandchildren in the early hours of Monday December 12, 2016. Her final days were spent with family and friends that she had touched in some small way throughout her memorable life. Her life would seem too short to many. However those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives.
Mrs. Betty Smith was born on August 6, 1928 in Rockwood, TN. to the union of Homer Phillips and Mamie Siler Phillips. Sister Smith accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at Lincoln Garden Church of Christ Cleveland, Mississippi. Upon moving to Oak Ridge she united with the Spurgeon Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church were she was a faithful member until her health begin to decline.
She was employed as a caretaker for many years in Cleveland, Mississippi. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her father Homer Phillips, mother Mamie Siler Phillips and beloved husband Charlie Smith, Sr. Sons Charlie Smith, Jr., Jimmie Lee Smith, beloved brothers Charlie Siler, Donald Jackson, Frank Phillips, sister Willie Mae Jackson, grandchildren Robert Earl Smith, William Kelly Smith and Jimmie Lee Smith, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, James Smith, of Florida, Eddie Smith Oak Ridge, and Carl Smith, Knoxville. Three daughters, Annie Grace Smith Oak Ridge, Barbara Ann Smith-Curb Cleveland, Mississippi and Shirley Ann Smith Booker of Georgia, 21 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a host of other loving relatives and friends. Two former daughter in laws Willie Jean Smith-Robertson and Stella Sue Smith.
Family will receive friends 11:00-1:00pm with the funeral following at 1:00pm Saturday December 17, 2016 at Spurgeon Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church 100 Wilberforce Ave. Oak Ridge, Rev. Churchill W. Moore, Sr., officiating.
