Betty Jeane Matthews Jackson, age 78, of Oliver Springs passed away Friday January 14, 2011 at NHC Healthcare of Oak Ridge.
Betty was born January 5, 1933 in Lecompte, Louisiana to the late Franklin H and Emily Patterson Matthews. A graduate of Forrest Hill High School where she was a member of an All State basketball and softball team. During her 58 year marriage to her husband Leighton they traveled the world while he was serving in the United States Air Force. While living in Japan Betty was instrumental in starting an orphanage for American Asian children. Betty loved serving the Lord and was a member of the Primitive Baptist faith. She enjoyed swimming and was a swimming and water safety instructor. Betty loved spending time with her family and enjoyed sewing and gardening.
Betty is survived by her husband Leighton H. Jackson of Oliver Springs, two sons Gregory Jackson and his wife Elaine of Oliver Springs and Jeffery Jackson of Cookeville, grandchildren Ashley Jackson of Clinton, Matthew Jackson of Cookeville, and Annie Smith and her husband Jason of Claxton, great grandchild Emily Smith of Claxton , sister Leola Ulmer of Lecompte, Louisiana , sister-in-laws Reba Bennett and her husband Dean of North Carolina, Melba Tuell and her husband Ed of Oliver Springs Marlene Jackson of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held Friday January 21, 2011 1:00 with Rev. Paul Metler officiating with interment following at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 1:00pm Friday January 21, 2011 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial gifts be sent to the Alzheimer's Association 2200 Sutherland Ave. Suite H102 Knoxville, TN 37919 in memory of Betty.
