Kimberly (Kim) Jo Scales, 58, departed this life on March 12, 2021. Kim was born May 30, 1962 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She was a 1980 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. She studied at Roane State Community College.
Kim was proceeded in death by her father Joe Scales, her mother Hattie Scales, and a brother Gerrod "Scott" Scales.
Kim was well known in the community and never met a stranger, and she always had a big smile for everyone. She was an avid reader and went on a book reading binge practically every weekend. It was impressive the level of details that she retained from everything she read. Kim spent more than 20 years at the Scarboro Day Care and Learning Center as a teacher where she was dearly loved by students and parents. She earned several early learning and development certifications and was always in a learning mode. When "Miss Kim" learned to cook, there was never a morsel of food wasted at Scarboro Day Care and Learning Center, and the children always wanted seconds. She enjoyed the arts and musical concerts but most of all watching cartoons. She almost never missed an Oak Ridge Community Concert, and she left a lasting impression on those that she met and those that she hung out with. Kim also worked, for a period of time, at Keystone Elder Care and part-time in the Shoe Department at the Oak Ridge Sears. She also provided private elderly care. Kim was a volunteer with Water Angels. Kim basically loved people but especially children.
Kim leaves to cherish her memory a son, Joseph Scales, Oak Ridge; an Aunt, Mattie Scales, Oak Ridge; cousins Jackie (Osmond) Robinson of Knoxville and Anthony Scales of Oak Ridge; a host of cousins in Alabama; several young adults refer to her as Aunt Kim or Miss Kim; and a host of friends. A more recent close friend who helped to comfort and care for her is Ms. Cathy Slater and her children Reccia, Cole, and Steven Slater who considered Kim their second mother.
Due to COVID concerns, protocol, and restrictions, a private memorial service will be held.
